Learning About Our Neighbors
On Sunday, July 9th many folks from Hope Lutheran enjoyed a special event. The Eritrean/Ethiopian congregation that meets at Hope shared a dinner and a "learning to know each other" event with Hope members. Ticket money and a grant from Thrivent paid for the groceries that ladies from the Eritrean congregation prepared for dinner. The Eritreans explained the spicy foods that they prepared. They even graciously modified some of it for our taste buds. There was a wide variety of food, most that we’d never eaten before. Everyone ate together and had an opportunity to visit. The Eritrean ladies wore lovely native dress. After dinner they showed us, on a large map, where they lived in Eritrea/Ethiopia before coming as immigrants to America. The “coffee ceremony” that has special significance in their culture was explained.
Hope's Mission and Outreach Committee planned and hosted the event and about 70 people attended. Those attending enjoyed a unique cultural experience. At the end of the evening someone was overheard saying that this event helped him to gain new respect for those who share our building for worship. Also thanks to Duane Lund and Ron Keenihan for taking pictures at the event.
