The author’s family moved from Kentucky to Middletown Ohio in search of a better life. The memoir describes poverty, low-paying jobs, alcoholism and verbal abuse and raises the question of responsibility of choices and the need for the necessary support of many to break the cycle.

4+ stars 320 pages. The story of how Martin Luther came to marry a runaway nun. This is a biography of two people with a relationship that turns into a love story. A marriage such as this was totally unheard of 500 years ago. According to one book reviewer, the reader will understand more of Luther as a husband and father and come to admire Katharina as his wife.

"A Town Like Alice"
by Nevil Schute
4+ stars 359 pages. Another WWII historical fiction about Jean Paget, an English woman living in Malaya, who is captured by invading Japanese and forced on a brutal seven-month death march with dozens of other women and children. The book was originally published in 1950 and reprinted in 2000.
